Straight A’s students can be idiots too

There are many who argue that the government had been unfair and biased based on the race-based quota system that scholarships are awarded based on skin colour and not by merit. First of all let us debate the key word here ‘merit’. Does 10A1’s or 21A1’s constitute true merit? If there’s a choice between a candidate A who scored 6A’s, the Head Prefect of a school, state-level sportsman and have fantastic communication skills (as exhibited during the interview selection process) and a Candidate B who’s a 21A’s bookworm student who shows no participation in sports and no interaction skills. Based on academic credentials, candidate B will score big time, but on being all-rounded candidate A will be of preference. Now let’s say the judges prefers candidate A and rejects candidate B a scholarship. Is it entirely unfair to candidate B?

I do think that the human knowledge is not limited to what is solely taught in school and what our academic paper results proved of us but other values like perseverance and leadership skills are more important which can be honed through the participation of students in sports and uniformed bodies. I have personally met straight A’s students who do not impress me at all. The reason why they are scoring big is simply because they memorise everything under the sun! They have no leadership skills, no human skills, no argument skills and most importantly no courage to do anything out of the box!
